A characteristic feature of horse mackerel is bony scutes along the entire length of the lateral line of the fish; in some cases they have backward-directed spines. They protect the fish from predators, at the same time, without interfering bending the body during fast swimming. Black sea horse mackerel is a subspecies of Mediterranean horse mackerel, but surpasses ocean mackerel in its taste.
